The Rhythm of February

February is the beginning of spring semester. Many students are optimistic about a new start and enjoy reuniting with friends who were away for January Term or fall. Later in the month, students may feel sad or depressed due to the winter weather or as the academic work starts to accumulate. In the spring, sophomores begin to declare majors; students begin looking for summer or fall internships; and seniors look toward graduation with mixed emotions.

Commission Gustavus 150 Update

There has been a focused energy around Commission Gustavus 150 since it was launched in October 2008. The eight Task Forces are moving through a process to formulate recommendations for action and funding, which will be prioritized by the Board of Trustees in August. President Ohle is also traveling the country holding 16 National Summit meetings to gather input from alumni, parents, and friends. Building Bridges Conference March 14

Mark your calendars on March 14, 2009, for the 14th annual Building Bridges Conference, “Liberation through Education.” The conference will put a spotlight on educational inequality in the United States and abroad. Erin Gruwell, the real-life hero portrayed in the 2007 film Freedom Writers, and Maria Reyes, one of Ms. Gruwell’s first students and an original Freedom Writer, will be the keynote speakers. Announcing Shine * A Royal Affair

Shine * A Royal Affair will be held on Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Minneapolis Convention Center. A Royal Affair is the biennial benefit gala of Gustavus Library Associates that supports Folke Bernadotte Memorial Library on the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College. Shine * A Royal Affair promises the usual elegant dining and spectacular live and silent auctions — plus a few surprises.

Getting A Job

The Career Center provides numerous resources for job searching, but it is ultimately up to each student to actively determine his or her future. It is never too early for students to be thinking about their futures or careers. First-year students and sophomores should already be writing resumes. Internships and career mentors are helpful for junior and senior students. Encourage your student to utilize the numerous resources available at the Career Center, including those listed at Jobs.

Study Abroad

More than 50 percent of Gustavus students study off-campus before graduating. The deadline for applying to study abroad for next fall, spring or academic year is March 1. For information to help students decide if this is the right choice for them, to determine financial and academic impacts, and to review program choices, go to Study Abroad.

Internships

More than half of Gustavus students undertake an internship at some point in their Gustavus career, during either the school year or the summer. This is an opportunity for students to explore career interests. Some take internships for credit, some are paid, some are full-time, and some are part-time in addition to other classes. An Internship Fair will be held on campus on March 4. An Internship Guidebook is also available to help determine if an internship is right for your student; it includes information on arranging an internship.

Financial Aid Renewal
