Gusties Start a New Academic Year

Gustavus Adolphus College will begin its 148^th academic year Tuesday, Sept. 8, when classes commence for the College’s 2,525 full-time students. Approximately 630 first-year students are enrolled at Gustavus this fall.

Move-in day for first-year students was Friday, Sept. 4, and you can view photos of move-in day or a video of the Gustie Greeters singing the Rouser.

President Jack R. Ohle will welcome all students and staff back to campus during the Opening Convocation at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, in Christ Chapel. The public is invited.

The Gustavus Orientation program is September 4-7 and is focused on helping new students with the transition to Gustavus and establishing a sense of belonging in this community. Visit the orientation website for more information.

Need a Good Summer Read?

Each summer, incoming Gustavus students are asked to read a “Reading in Common” book that will be discussed during New Student Orientation and, for some students, during their First Term Seminar course. The Reading in Common selection for 2009 is Enrique’s Journey by Sonia Narario. In this astonishing true story, award-winning journalist Sonia Nazario recounts the unforgettable odyssey of a Honduran boy who braves unimaginable hardship and peril to reach his mother in the United States. In addition to being integrated into New Student Orientation, this year’s selection will also be a part of the College’s campuswide themed learning program, Gustavus Global Insight, which is focused this academic year on Mexico. More information about the book and its author is available at Reading in Common. Nazario will give a lecture on Monday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m. Feel free to join in this common Gustavus experience.
