Forty years ago, Gustavus reconfigured the academic schedule to have fall semester, January Term, and spring semester. The month of January was set aside as a time of experiential learning and deeper exploration into a single topic. January Term continues to be a time for Gustavus students to focus on one course either on campus or off, traveling abroad or participating in a career exploration internship. The academic theme for this January Term is social justice and the goals are to promote exploration of social justice in all fields and to lead faculty and students to learn, reflect, and act on social justice principles and issues in the United States and abroad.
