In addition to staying connected with their friends by cell phone, instant messaging, and e-mail, Gustavus students have embraced a new connecting tool, “Thefacebook.” Thefacebook is an online directory for social networking at colleges and universities which launched in 2004. Students log in and can connect to any other student who is part of the network, either at Gustavus or at another participating college. Students then form links to people they know. This allows a student’s college friends to get to know all the friends the person has linked. A student’s friends from childhood can connect with their friends from high school and their friends now at Gustavus. One concern about this tool is the personal information student share that can jeopardize their safety. You are encouraged to talk with your child about limiting the sharing of such items as room and phone number. Also, remind your child that information on Thefacebook stays in the file and now employers often review postings and pictures when making hiring decisions for internships or jobs.
