Need a Good Summer Read? Posted on July 1st, 2007 by

Each summer, incoming Gustavus students are asked to complete a “Reading in Common” book that will be discussed during New Student Orientation and, for some students, during their First Term Seminar course. The Reading in Common selection for 2007 is Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, a Man Who Would Cure the World by Tracy Kidder. A non-fiction narrative, the book follows Farmer from his work at Harvard University to his work in Haiti, Russia, and other countries. The book is based on the Haitian proverb, “Beyond mountains there are mountains”— meaning when one problem is solved another one is presented. More information about the book and its author is available at Reading in Common. Tracy Kidder will give a campus lecture on Thursday, Sept. 27, in Christ Chapel. Feel free to join in this common Gustavus experience.
