Need a Good Summer Read? Posted on July 1st, 2008 by

Each summer, incoming Gustavus students are asked to complete a “Reading in Common” book that will be discussed during New Student Orientation and, for some students, during their First-Term Seminar course. The Reading in Common selection for 2008 is Chinese Lessons: Five Classmates and the Story of the New China by John Pomfret. The book recounts the lives of several of Pomfret’s former classmates at Nanjing University in order to examine China’s tumultuous history and promising future. In addition to being integrated into New Student Orientation, this year’s selection will also be a part of the College’s new, campus-wide themed learning program, Gustavus Global Insight, which is focused this academic year on China. More information about the book and its author is available at Reading in Common. Pomfret will give a campus lecture on Sept. 15, in Christ Chapel. Feel free to join in this common Gustavus experience.
