St. Lucia Tradition Continues Posted on December 3rd, 2009 by

Gustavus will celebrate its 69th annual Festival of St. Lucia on Thursday, Dec. 10. As part of the celebration, a sophomore woman and five of her classmates are selected to serve as St. Lucia and the Lucia Court. The six women are chosen based on academic achievement, spiritual leadership, and service to the College and others as part of a Gustavus tradition that dates back to 1941. This annual celebration is intended to commemorate the courage shown by St. Lucia who, according to legend, was put to death for being Christian and helping the poor. The Lucia Court begins the day at 5 a.m. by caroling in the residence halls, followed by a special Chapel service, and a luncheon sponsored by Gustavus Library Associates. This year the lunch will feature Neal Hagberg ’81 and Leandra Peak ’83. Neal & Leandra, who have given concerts in 45 states, will bring to life holiday classics from their two Christmas CDs.
